Get ready to cozy up with Glühwein, baked apples and a truly magical atmosphere which would melt even the Grinch’s cold heart.
The Munich Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz, the heart of the city, is the original Christmas market – a true classic. Throughout Munich’s districts, you’ll also find a variety of unique and beautifully crafted markets to explore. Here’s an overview.
#1 The Christkindlmarkt
When you think of Christmas markets in Munich, the one in Marienplatz immediately comes to mind. And it makes total sense since it’s the oldest one in Germany dating back to the 14th century. It spreads across 20,000 sqm from Marienplatz all the way to the tower of the neo-Gothic Town Hall. You and your kids are going to have a blast. Ice-skate at Karlstor, enjoy some hot chocolate while strolling around, watch a theater with marionettes, or welcome the Christmas spirit by greeting a bunch of Santas in red suits and white beards on bicycles!
A gigantic Christmas tree decorated with 3,000 twinkling lights, live Christmas music, the irresistible smell of curried sausage (Currywurst) and candied almonds, and over 150 stalls at which you can find everything—from chocolates and spicy cookies to toys and ornaments as well as pretzel-shaped products the kids are going to love. Magical, isn’t it?

Tip: watch out for the Krampuslauf; it can be super scary for both kids and adults!
#2 The Chinese Tower
Another great choice for you and your family when in Munich during Christmas is the Christmas market right at the base of the Chinese tower in the English garden—one of the largest public parks in the world.
You’ll find a lovely beer garden, great Bavarian delicacies, and various kid-friendly activities, like horse-carriage rides, a traditional carousel and a proper treasure-hunt! Your kids can also have the time of their lives at the Santa Claus wooden workshop, or at Grandma Claus’ cozy house where they will listen to lovely stories while you’re nearby enjoying some mulled wine by the fire.
#3 The Fairytale Bazaar
You simply have to visit Munich’s Fairytale Bazaar (Märchenbazar) with your children. It’s alternative and artsy, full of young families and fun activities for the whole family. Make soap or candles with your kids and the helpful staff, buy organic socks or t-shirts, vegan-leather wallets and find thoughtful gifts for your loved ones. You can also try the unique food there, like vegan kebabs, banana bread and special drinks.
#4 The Haidhausen
Looking for something smaller, more local and cozier? The Haidhausen Christmas market in Weissenburger Platz will be perfect for you: with 50 stalls, sparkling lights all around, and a special event that children are going to love: the Haidhauser Lichternacht—a torchlight parade that takes place every Friday.
All in all, every Christmas market in Munich, although unique, has something in common: unlimited fun for everyone!
