Amsterdam is an impressive city in which there is plenty to see and do.
Visit a museum
Some of the most spectacular museums the city has to offer can be found on Museumplein. The Rijksmuseum is undoubtedly the most popular, not least for its comprehensive collection of works by the country’s most famous artists but also for the building itself, which is extremely impressive. Directly behind this are the giant iamsterdam letters where tourists from the world over like to take a souvenir snapshot.
The Van Gogh Museum provides insight into the life of Vincent van Gogh over three floors – from his beginnings as an artist through to his tragic death. His most famous painting, ‘Sunflowers’, is among those on display here. Those who prefer modern art will love the Stedelijk Museum.
Explore Amsterdam from the land and water
In Amsterdam, everyone rides a bike, and there is undoubtedly no more authentic a way to explore the city. Cycles are available for hire at the MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam City West, among other locations. A boat trip along the city’s canals is also a fantastic experience. Countless canal tours are offered. In fine weather, though, it is probably most fun to hire a pedalo and to set off under your own steam.
Shop in the “9 Straatjes”
Those wishing to do a spot of shopping and discover lesser-known Dutch brands will find all they seek in the 9 Straatjes. Fabulous boutiques, unusual souvenirs and little cafés perfect for a short break can be found here.
Visit one of the most beautiful bridges in Amsterdam: the Staalmeestersbrug
Did you know that Amsterdam has more bridges than Venice? The Staalmeestersbrug on which loved-up couples hang little locks is located just a short distance from Rembrandtplein and the flower market. It is the perfect place for taking photos and is also lovely at sunset, as the sun shines directly on the tower opposite and the water glitters in the sunlight.
Sample the many Dutch specialities
Holland is famous for its wide selection of cheeses. You are able to sample the many different types in the shops here and to then purchase a few chunks of your favourite to take home with you. There is also an outstanding range of different beers. These are best ordered with some Bitterballen meat snacks or crunchy Kroketten.
