An Unforgettable Alternative Tour by Sandemans
The coolest thing about this tour is that we actually came up with this idea for a Vesterbro Tour while brainstorming one day with the guys from Sandemans, which eventually turned into the Alternative Tour, including a trip to Christiania as well, as it’s one of the main tourist attractions of Copenhagen. And voilà! We have the Alternative Tour running now by Sandemans Free Walking Tours every Saturday and Sunday from 3 pm starting at the Baresso Café next to the Central Station.
Alternative Tour Copenhagen – Where does it take you?
The Alternative Tour starts at the Baresso Café next to the Central Station as mentioned, after which the first stop is at the Central Station of Copenhagen. Here you get to learn that this area used to be the entrance to the city with a lot of traffic and action. The Central Station is also located right next to the Red Light District, which is the next point on this tour. Here the main street is basically Istedgade, where you get to pass by our house, continuing down to the Men’s Shelter and Skyen, the place where drug addicts can legally come in to get their fix in a clean environment – that’s right, Denmark is weird like that, but it’s got its reasons. On the right side of the street you will be able to window shop in different kinds of Sex Shops, as the tour continues to Viktoriagade where you turn right and make a quick stop at Mikkeller, the Danish beer brand that made it into the Top 5 beers in the world. Out on the main road, Vesterbrogade, you will get to see The New Theater (Det Ny Teater) and right after visit the Museum Street, Absalonsgade, which got its name due to its many historical attractions, like old lamp posts and hydrants. On the Alternative Tour you also get to see the old Red Light District, Westend, with all its old French balconies where prostitutes used to market themselves. The Shooting Range is also a great sight, including a beautiful old wall built for conflicting reasons – either to block off the sight of poor people on the other side, or to keep passerbyers safe – we’ll never know! A quick stop at the Graffiti Walls right before the Meatpacking District, and you’re down in one of the most vibrant parts of town. The Meatpacking District is one of the coolest places to hang out in Copenhagen, it has a wide array of restaurants, cafes, bars, and it’s also a historical place. There are a few bars that only real connoisseurs know about – you might have to knock on every door until you find them.
Christiania Tour
This is also where the Vesterbro tour ends & you embark on the Christiania tour. Four metro stops away lies the famous Christiania town, a magical place where smoking weed is legal – well, tolerated. This is where the tour guide will stop and give you the back story to this place which is so popular. No pictures to be taken here, just stride through it and enjoy the view. There are a lot of people living in Christiania, and you will get a peak into their lives.
The tour ends after this, you’re welcome to either head back to the city center or enjoy Christianshavn or Papirøen for the harbour and food market.
