The bike has become far more than a means of transport. It is status symbol and statement in one. Especially in big cities like Berlin, people choose their bikes according to their personal lifestyle. Sporty, comfortable, colourful or practical – there is a bike for everyone.
The precursor to Carnival as we know it today was being celebrated 5000 years ago in Mesopotamia, and already in the Middle Ages the high-spirited celebrations that mark the beginning of Lent – including the practice of dressing up – were widespread and popular. Today, Carnival exists in different variations worldwide and generally divides people into two categories. On the one hand, you have the fans: those who love dressing up, who are always on the lookout for an extraordinary costume and who are barely able to stand the anticipation in the build-up to Carnival season.
I have never seen anything like it! It is just 10 o’clock in the morning and the first party boats are already chugging by on the canal outside our house. Decked out entirely in orange, they are packed with people in a jovial mood. The speakers are on full blast, party hit after party hit blares out, and we also turn the music up in our house.
