It only takes an hour to 90 minutes to get to the mountains from Munich by train. So what are you waiting for? Hop on the train and combine your city break with a romantic trip to the snow-capped mountains. From Munich Central Station, you can easily reach the day trip destinations described here by bus and train. Have fun!

#1 Horse-drawn sleigh ride

A horse-drawn sleigh ride through snowy mountains is the epitome of romance. Don’t you agree? Wrapped up in thick blankets, you will speed through the forest, hear the bells on the horse’s harness and breathe in the clear mountain air. The powerful horses plough through the snow, and you will feel like you are in a fairytale.

With a view of the Zugspitze – the biggest mountain in Germany – coachman Schretter will take you through the winter landscape in Lermoos. His carriage has space for up to 8 people. The journey lasts around an hour. If there is not enough snow on the ground for a sleigh ride, you can simply go on a carriage ride instead. You can also go in summer!

Info:

Kutschfahrten Schretter, Lussgasse 4, 6631 Lermoos (Tirol)

Journey: approx. 2 hours, RB train from Munich Central Station to Lermoos

#2 Romantic boat trip in the dark

In winter, a boat ride on the beautiful Lake Tegernsee is also very romantic. Lake Tegernsee is surrounded by a beautiful panoramic view of the mountains, and late at night, the stars twinkle in the sky and you can see the lights on the lakeshore. The ride is particularly lovely during Christmas time, as you can see the Christkindl markets on both sides of the lake. Then, you can take the boat from one Christmas market to another.

The best option is to board the boat in the town of Tegernsee and take the boat in a clockwise direction to Rottach-Egern. From there, you can return by boat via Bad Wiessee (takes around 40 minutes) or take the RVO Ringlinie A and B bus (9559) towards Tegernsee, which departs every 30 minutes. Afterwards, you can warm up at the Tegernseer Bräuhaus.

Info:

Steg am Tegernsee, Seestraße 3, 83684 Tegernsee

Journey: approx. 1 hour, BOB (Bayerische Oberlandbahn) train from Munich Central Station to Tegernsee train station

#3 Cross-country skiing

When was the last time you did something for the first time? Trying out something new is always fun. Above all with your best friends or – even better – your partner. So how does cross-country skiing sound? Cross-country skiing through beautiful, snow-capped mountains. Don’t be surprised if you fall to the ground with a smile on your face, because the cross-country skis are really wobbly. And once you have managed to go a few metres without falling over for the first time, you may be bowled over with joy. You will be so proud of yourselves. Adventures bring people together, so experience an adventure!

Good to know: The cross-country ski trails towards Bayrischzell are more or less guaranteed to have snow, even in relatively warm weather.

#4 Tobogganing fun and Kaiserschmarrn

This tip is the perfect combination of hiking, fun, and relaxation. With your toboggan, you will walk up a broad forest path, enjoy warm Kaiserschmarrn at the Neureuther Gasthof, and then dash back down the valley with a view of Lake Tegernsee. What could be more romantic? Toboggans are available for hire from the Rodelclub Rottach-Egern. If you order the day before (tel. 08022 5491), the toboggans can be delivered to a starting point of your choice. Best time to visit: November to March. You can see the snow status of the tobogganing routes here: http://www.neureuth.com

If you don’t fancy walking, you can travel by train to the nearby Wallberg mountain and toboggan down from there. This route is more challenging and very steep in parts. Please wear sturdy footwear when tobogganing – it will help you brake.

Info:

Berggasthof Neureuth, Neureuth 1, 83684 Tegernsee

Ascent approx. 1.5 hours

Journey: approx. 1 hour, BOB (Bayerische Oberlandbahn) train from Munich Central Station to Tegernsee train station
