Best Things to Do on a weekend in Frankfurt

Tips for accommodation, eating, sightseeing and shopping in Frankfurt. Here you can discover the best way to spend a wonderful weekend in Mainhattan and also what you simply cannot afford to miss out on.

We decided to stay at the MEININGER Hotel near Frankfurt city center during our weekend break. It is not only the central location and the unbeatable value for money that impress us about the hotel, the multiple award-winning service also made our stay here a very special experience.

After check-in at the hotel, we head for the Main tower and take the lift in the skyscraper up to the viewing platform. We enjoy a phenomenal view over the Frankfurt skyline from a height of almost 200 meters.

We then take a leisurely stroll through Frankfurt’s legendary ‘Kleinmarkthallecovered market. Italian delicacies, Spanish tapas, Indian spices – here we try fine foods from all over the world before going shopping. Those who like to stroll through the shops on Saturdays to look for a bargain or two don’t have far to walk from the Kleinmarkthalle until they find their paradise. Numerous specialist shops can also be found alongside famous department stores on Frankfurt’s most popular shopping street.

What would a visit to the Main metropolis be without a glass of Frankfurt cider? The Gemalte Haus is one of the oldest and most traditional cider taverns in Frankfurt. The tavern has been family owned since 1936 and alongside daily changing menus, also serves up Frankfurt’s typical green sauce as a matter of course. We bring the evening to a leisurely end in Sachsenhausen. Then it’s a 45-minute walk over the “Eiserner Steg” footbridge or a shorter (20 minute) journey with the underground and city train back to the hotel.

Weekend in Frankfurt – Day 2

An extensive breakfast buffet with coffee and tea, cereals and yoghurt, fresh fruit, wholegrain bread and rolls, cheese, jam and chocolate hazelnut spread awaits us in the hotel the next morning. Revitalized for the day, we decide to spend Sunday morning in one of the many museums. Although a visit to the nearby world-famous Städel Museum is an option, at this point we decide to head to the Museum Judengasse, which was completed in 2016. An important chapter in Frankfurt’s history is portrayed here. Even for children, a visit is sure to be far from boring n, since interactive stations invite the young museum visitors to embark on a journey of discovery through the ruins.

It’s worth taking a stroll along the Main Promenade if the weather is kind enough, but before doing so, we decide to make a detour to the lovingly decorated Cafe Sugar Mama. This is on the way to the river anyway and offers homemade delicacies from 11 am for when hunger calls.

Would you prefer to do something that is more characteristic of Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon instead? Those who haven’t yet had their fill of the local cider from the night before and aren’t particularly keen on the classic hop-on-hop-off bus experience, can enjoy a city tour on the “Ebbelwei-Express. Enjoy Frankfurt specialties and the views of famous sights, such as the Römer and the Paulskirche (Saint Paul’s Church) during your journey on this quaint train.

A weekend is, of course, far too short to discover the whole of the Main metropolis. You must therefore patiently wait for the Fressgass (literally, “Grazing Street”), the Goethe-Haus and the hip Nordend for your next visit to Frankfurt. A good reason to come back here again soon.
