Following the openings in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, and Marseille, MEININGER Hotels is developing its fifth location in France, set to open in Strasbourg at 16 Place de Gare, directly opposite the main train station. The Europcar building, acquired by Crédit Agricole Alsace Vosges and Banque des Territoires, will be demolished to make way for a new structure. Developed by Kaufman & Broad, the new building will span nearly 4,000 square meters across eight floors. Alongside the MEININGER Hotel, the ground floor of the building will once again house a Europcar branch. The hotel is expected to open in 2027.
Central location reinforces MEININGER’s motto “Step out and explore”
The new MEININGER Hotel Strasbourg will offer 114 rooms and a total of 349 beds, including double rooms, as well as triple, quadruple, and six-bed rooms, following the brand’s flexible room concept. Located at Place de Gare, the hotel offers an ideal starting point for city explorers. The charming district of La Petite France, with its canals reminiscent of Venice, is just a ten-minute walk away, as is the Grande Île, Strasbourg's historic old town. The European Parliament can be reached within 15 minutes via a direct bus connection. “In line with our MEININGER motto ‘Step out and explore,’ the location is perfect for discovering Strasbourg’s key attractions,” says Ajit Menon, CEO of MEININGER Hotels, explaining the choice of location.
UNESCO World Heritage, EU politics, and culinary delights make Strasbourg stand out
Strasbourg, France’s seventh-largest city, attracts over four million visitors annually. Known for its unique Alsatian culture, blending French and German influences, the city is a popular destination in France. It is also home to major European institutions like the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights, placing it at the heart of Europe. The city’s UNESCO-listed historic old town features stunning architecture that spans centuries. Beyond its cultural significance, Strasbourg is renowned for its breweries, its winemaking traditions, and its world-famous Christmas market, drawing countless visitors each year. “The combination of international politics, rich cultural heritage, and culinary delights makes Strasbourg a dynamic destination for diverse audiences,” says Ajit Menon. He adds: “Our hybrid concept, which blends the best features of hostels and hotels, makes MEININGER Hotels an ideal fit for Strasbourg, where families, couples, backpackers, school groups, friends, and business travelers all feel at home.”
MEININGER’s ongoing expansion
The MEININGER Hotel in Strasbourg is the fourth new location currently in development, following openings in Barcelona, Kiel and Edinburgh. In addition, ten existing properties are being renovated, with more projects in the works to bring them in line with MEININGER’s current standards. MEININGER Hotels' expansion strategy is defined by growth through new properties while continuing to invest in existing ones. "We approach each new opening with care, rather than focusing on rapid expansion. This allows us to prioritize quality and sustainability. Our goal is to gradually expand our proven hybrid hotel concept into new markets and establish more locations," concludes Ajit Menon.
